The
first Naskapi radio station was built in 1980 when the Naskapis
lived in Schefferville Matimekosh.
When the Naskapis moved to Kawawachikamach in 1983 they rebuilt
the radio station near the Nation Office.
Broadcasting starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 11:30 p.m.
The Naskapi radio station is a vital Naskapi-language communication link in our community, providing us with identity, entertainment and information.
The radio station is operated by the Naskapi Development Corporation. It plays Native, Country, Rock and Popular music. It is an important avenue for community and public service announcements, bingo and local communication.
Since 2003 the station has been broadcasting “Lamp to my Feet” Naskapi Radio Bible Time, a 30-minute program of readings from the New Naskapi language Bible Translation produced by the Development Corporation. Due to an enthusiastic response, this programming has been expanded to three times a day.
The Corporation is also producing Naskapi language broadcasts of the traditional legends and stories.
